Richard Holstein, Senior Member of Software Engineering Staff

With over 35 years of professional programming experience, Mr. Holstein brings enormous breadth of knowledge and dedication to high quality software engineering.

Mr. Holstein comes to The Gang of Four from Compaq Computer Corporation, where he was chief architect and implementor of suite of tools automating the UNIX Quality Assurance function. The tools eliminated much of the drudgery associated with repetitious testing, and enabled timely and almost effortless reporting of overall testing status.

Prior to that role, Mr. Holstein led a project which enabled nearly seamless user level integration of UNIX and OpenVMS. Users experienced in one operating system could retain their level of competence with the other, even as novices in that second operating system. His talks on comparative system administration won acclaim at DECUS.

While a member of OpenVMS Development, Mr. Holstein worked in kernel support, device drivers, and new CPU support. He moved into VMS from the TOPS-10 group, where he did operating system support.

Mr. Holstein's publications include UNIX for OpenVMS Users, now in its third edition. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
